1. Scope

This Privacy Policy explains how Legal Apprentice (“we,” “us”) collects, uses, and shares personal information when you visit legalapprentice.org, email us, or use our matching / study-aid facilitation services.

We are a small for-profit sole proprietorship. This notice is written to be practical and CCPA-aware at a high level. It is not legal advice.

2. What We Collect

We typically collect information you provide voluntarily, including via email and forms:

  • Identity & contact: name, email address, phone (if provided), city/region;
  • Role & eligibility context: whether you seek to be an Apprentice or Mentor; high-level background relevant to matching (e.g., education status, practice area interest, preferred geography);
  • Mentor-related: bar number or license status (if you volunteer it), years of practice, capacity to supervise, preferred subjects;
  • Apprentice-related: LOS interest, preferred subjects, schedule constraints, State Bar registration status (as you report it);
  • Communications: content of emails and form submissions;
  • Payment (if applicable): billing details processed by payment processors—we do not intend to store full card numbers on our own systems;
  • Technical (if Site analytics are enabled): IP address, browser type, device info, pages viewed, referring URL. Analytics tools, if enabled, will be disclosed here when confirmed.

We do not operate a public shopping cart. Fees are disclosed before any Payment Trigger. Billing occurs only after registration with Legal Apprentice and a match, under a separate agreement. Refund requests may be emailed within 14 days of the Payment Trigger for case-by-case review (interim).

3. How We Use Information

We use personal information to:

  • Respond to inquiries and operate the Site;
  • Register participants and facilitate matching between Apprentices and Mentors;
  • Provide optional Year-1 study aids (Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, Legal Writing & Research) when purchased / included;
  • Process payments and keep business records;
  • Send service-related notices (match proposals, agreement docs, policy updates);
  • Improve our services and comply with law.

We do not sell personal information for money. We do not sell personal information for money and do not currently engage in cross-context behavioral advertising.

4. How We Share Information

We may share information with:

  • Mentors and Apprentices, as needed to propose and facilitate a match (e.g., name, contact, relevant background summary you authorized us to share);
  • Service providers / processors who help us run email, hosting, payments, or document tools, under obligations to use data only for our instructions;
  • Professional advisors (e.g., accountant, attorney) as needed;
  • Authorities when required by law, court order, or to protect rights and safety;
  • A successor if we reorganize, form an entity, or transfer the business (including if we later form an entity).

We do not file State Bar applications for you. State Bar filings and LOS papers remain between you, your Mentor (if any), and the State Bar.

5. Retention

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above, including match facilitation, dispute handling, legal compliance, and ordinary business records. Retention periods may vary by record type. As a baseline for MVP: inquiry emails are typically retained up to 24 months; matched-participant files are retained as needed for the engagement and ordinary business/legal records (often several years). A concrete schedule will be finalized with counsel.

6. Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical measures appropriate to a small sole proprietorship (e.g., access controls, reputable email/hosting providers). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. You use the Site and email at your own risk regarding residual security risk.
