Apprentice FAQ

Answers for people who want to pursue California Law Office Study with help finding a Mentor. Legal Apprentice is not a law school.

Who is Apprentice registration for?

Adults who want to study under a qualifying supervising attorney or judge through California’s Law Office Study path — for example paralegals, working professionals, parents, or career changers who need a real Mentor match rather than a JD classroom. You should be ready for multi-year hour requirements, monthly exams, FYLSX rules, and State Bar reporting.

What does “Mentor” mean here?

Mentor means a qualifying supervising attorney or judge under State Bar rules (including Rule 4.29) — not a casual advisor. Your Mentor supervises hours, owns the course outline, and grades the required monthly exams.

How does matching work?

You register as an Apprentice. Mentors register separately. We help connect serious Apprentices with Mentors who have capacity to supervise. A match is the scarce step; coursework alone does not create a supervisor.

When does billing start?

We bill after a real match is underway — not via a public cart before you have a Mentor path. Details are confirmed when a match progresses.

What do you provide after a match?

Study structure and process support: plans, practice tools, and logs so four years of work has a spine, plus plain-language orientation to applications and reporting. Your Mentor still owns the official outline and grades monthly exams. Education credit runs through your Mentor and the State Bar.

What we don’t do

• Operate as a State Bar–approved law school or JD program
• Award a degree or guarantee Bar credit, approval, or passage
• Replace your Mentor or the State Bar Applicant Portal
• Practice law or give legal advice about your personal admission case
