Mentor FAQ
On Legal Apprentice, Mentor means a qualifying supervising attorney or judge for California Law Office Study — not a casual coach. We are not a law school.
Who can serve as a supervising Mentor?
CalBar sets the qualification rules (see Rule 4.29 and the LOS pages). In short, supervision is typically by an active California attorney who meets the State Bar’s practice/teaching history requirements, or by a judge of a California court of record. Always confirm current eligibility on the State Bar site before taking on a student.
What duties does a Mentor own?
- Direct supervision for the required monthly hours (including in-person minimums over each six-month period)
- The official course outline / course of study
- Administering and grading monthly written exams
- Confirming academic progress and supporting semi-annual reporting / attestations through the State Bar process
LOS is a study program under supervision — not merely employment in an office. Working hours alone do not equal study credit.
What Legal Apprentice provides vs what you own
Legal Apprentice provides: Mentor–Apprentice matching, optional study plans and practice tools, logs, and process orientation so the multi-year path stays organized.
You (the Mentor) own: the State Bar course outline, graded monthly exams, hour supervision, and official attestations/reporting. We do not replace those duties.
Why register as a Mentor?
If you can take on LOS supervision and want serious candidates without inbox chaos, registration lets us match you with Apprentices who understand the commitment. Billing for platform use is tied to a real match path — not a public cart.
What we don’t do
- Claim to be a law school or award JD credit
- Guarantee Bar passage or admission outcomes for your Apprentice
- Substitute for your graded monthly exams or CalBar reporting obligations
